CIPFA calls for universal green reporting standards

CIPFA calls for universal green reporting...A leading accountancy body has called for the introduction of universally-accepted standards for the reporting and monitoring of greenhouse gases.

The Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) has added its voice to the debate, stating that achieving and tracking greenhouse gas emissions reductions is "vital" to measuring convergence towards the objectives of an effective climate treaty.

Steve Freer, CIPFA's chief executive, said that accountancy professionals can play a key role in developing and implementing standards for reducing greenhouse gases.

He commented that this was a central aim of the recent Copenhagen climate change summit.

"Unless clear universal standards are adopted, the plan to reduce global warming will be in jeopardy," Mr Freer stated.

Earlier this month, John White, president of Ireland's Institute of Certified and Public Accountants, claimed that ethical behaviour is central to the accountancy profession.

He told the Irish Examiner that the industry needs "high-quality, reliable financial information" if it is to thrive.
