Businesses urged to look after consumer dataMarketers must make consumer data security a top priority if they are to maintain their business reputation, it has been claimed.

Robert Keitch, chief of membership and brand at the Direct Marketing Association, said a number of problems can result from data breaches, including fines, loss of custom, damaged brands and prosecution.

"Companies that have been involved in well-publicised cases of breaches of their customers' data have received rough justice at the hands of the media," he noted.

Mr Keitch added that implementing robust consumer information security measures must therefore be "a top priority" for any company that holds customer data.

"Not doing so could strike a serious blow to their bottom line," he stated.

Echoing the comments, Equifax external affairs director Neil Munroe said the security of customer information is "paramount for a brand's reputation", adding that by implementing sound security measures, it gives both owners and users of data more confidence.
