BT 'UK's most diverse employer'

BT 'UK's most diverse employer'BT has topped a list of the most racially diverse employers in the UK.

The firm came first in Race for Opportunity's annual equality index, followed by media group Pearson in second and the Ministry of Defence in third.

Sandra Kerr, national campaign director at Race for Opportunity praised these firms for their performance, but urged all employers to do more to boost diversity.

"Without very targeted action to speed up the progression of ethnic minorities in employment - programmes designed to get ethnic minorities into senior positions for example - the inequality that exists within organisations will persist," she said.

The study found that only 4.3 per cent of board-level employees are from an ethnic minority background, although this group makes up 8.5 per cent of the UK's total workforce.

Earlier this year, the government pledged to ensure that ethnic minority workers are not "left behind" during the recession, promising to adapt its policies if any one group was hit disproportionally hard.
