Further spending cuts will be announced in addition to the £6.2 billion savings set out yesterday, the chief Treasury secretary has revealed.
David Laws said an "aggressive" series of cuts will be needed if the UK's £163 billion budget deficit is to be reduced.
Speaking to the Financial Times, the Liberal Democrat minister said he was "mentally prepared" for receiving abuse from the public over the tough budget cuts set to be made.
He acknowledged that his position could be seen as a possible 'hatchet' role, in light of the action required to restore health to the public purse.
However, Mr Laws said he was pleased to have received the job, as it would allow him to protect key services and vulnerable people.
Earlier this week, the government announced major cuts affecting the majority of departments, while also freezing civil service recruitment and scrapping child trust funds.
