ASA: Advertising compliance improved during 2009The Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) has reported a ten per cent fall in the number of promotions complained about during 2009.

Some 28,978 individual complaints were received last year, resulting in 2,397 campaigns being changed or withdrawn, the regulator revealed.

According to the ASA, the vast majority of advertising material published in 2009 was compliant with industry regulations.

Lord Chris Smith, chairman of the regulator, said this was "highly encouraging" for the industry.

"Overall, we are well placed to meet the challenges ahead, confident that the regulatory system is evolving with the ever changing media landscape," he stated.

However, Lord Smith reiterated the need to protect children and young people from harm and inappropriate content.

Particular concerns were raised in 2009 over an ad for the film Wanted featuring Angelina Jolie, which appeared to condone and glamorise violence, and a promotion by American Apparel which was accused of sexualising children.
