Accountancy profession still welcoming graduates, says CIPD

Graduates can maximise their chances of securing a good job by targeting a sector where demand for new entrants is high, such as accountancy, it has been claimed.
According to Gerwyn Davies, public policy adviser at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, university-leavers from all across Europe, and even further afield, are seeking employment in the UK, meaning competition for work is fierce.
As a result, he has urged degree-holders to give themselves the best possible chance of success in their unenviable job hunt.
Mr Davies said that while engaging in postgraduate study and lifelong learning can make a difference by continuing to develop a CV, career selection is highly important for those wishing to thrive in the workplace.
"In the private sector, we are still seeing shortages in accountancy and finance," he commented.
"Given the new world that we're now in, career prospects can be improved by taking note of this."
Latest accountancy recruitment figures suggest that Mr Davies may be offering sound advice, with the number of UK vacancies increasing.
A further 2.69 per cent increase in job availability was recorded by the Ashdown Group Jobs Index during July, building upon the market's consistent performance in recent months.
Since the start of May 2010, UK demand for accountancy professionals is reported to have risen by 11.5 per cent, a finding which may encourage graduates to reconsider their training and employment options.
Commenting on the current accountancy recruitment market, Ashdown Group director John Lynes said "the consistent upswing in demand is a very positive sign".
